Earning College Credits During High School

Concurrent Enrollment

Two Rivers offers several Concurrent Enrollment (CE) courses allowing students to simultaneously earn high school credit and college credits while on site at Two Rivers High School. College credits may be earned through the following institutions depending on the course:

• Dakota County Technical College
• Inver Hills Community College
• Minnesota State University, Mankato
• Southwest State

College in the Schools (CIS)

Motivated juniors and seniors can earn college credits by taking University of Minnesota (U of M) courses at Two Rivers School through the College in the Schools (CIS) program. CIS courses are self-selected and there is no application process. Please note that some may require instructor approval. Students will experience the pace and rigor of U of M courses but will be taught by Two Rivers teachers without leaving the high school. View the most current Academic Planner on page 99 for a list of AP courses at Two Rivers.

Advanced Placement (AP)

The College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) Program provides students the opportunity to earn nationally-recognized college credit while still in high school. Advanced Placement courses are designed by the College Board. There is a separate fee required for each AP® test taken by the student. Students take an exam at the end of the year and receive a score between 1-5. Scores of three or higher are recognized at many colleges and universities as granting college credit; credit is increased as scores increase.  While the amount and type of credit you receive depends on the college you attend, most will allow you to skip basic courses and around half will allow you to start as a sophomore if you passed enough AP classes.

Students who are highly motivated and who meet course prerequisites are recommended to take AP courses and examinations. AP courses offered at Two Rivers include AP Environmental Science, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Physics Mechanics C, AP Human Geography, AP World History, AP Language and Composition, AP PreCalculus, AP Calculus (AB), AP Calculus (BC), AP Statistics, AP Computer Science, and AP Business with Personal Finance. View the most current Academic Planner on page 98 for a list of AP courses at Two Rivers.

Post-secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO)

PSEO is a program that allows students in grades 10-12 to enroll in college courses at eligible colleges and universities. Students earn both college and high school credit by successfully completing the course(s). Most PSEO courses are offered on the college or university campus, although some are online. Each participating college or university sets its own admissions requirements for enrollment into the PSEO courses. PSEO courses on a full- or part-time basis. Sophomores are eligible to enroll in PSEO on a more limited basis. If you are considering taking PSEO coursework during the school year, please notify your school counselor of your plans in writing by October 30 or May 30 of each year of the intent to enroll in postsecondary courses during the following academic term.
